COVID-19 Pandemic

Click on each episode for its description and learner objectives.

In March of 2020, dental offices and dental institutions around the world were required to shut down to mitigate the spread of COVID-19, the coronavirus that is responsible for a deadly pandemic. In efforts to focus on social distancing and to “flatten the curve”, oral health providers have been asked to reschedule non-essential dental procedures for their patients. This podcast assists the dental team in making decisions on what patients should be immediately treated for and what procedures should be considered elective. Water sprays and aerosols must be minimized with this highly contagious virus so alternative dental treatment options will also be discussed to prevent disease transmission. Furthermore, this podcast will provide guidelines on how dental professionals can continue to compassionately care for their patients while having safe measures in place to protect team members and not overwhelm our already overburdened healthcare system.

At the end of this podcast the audience will be able to:

  • discern what constitutes a dental emergency vs. a dental urgency treatment during this time of the COVID-19 public health emergency.
  • make treatment plans and deliver care safely during this time of the COVID-19 public health emergency.
  • minimize the use of aerosols and high-speed hand pieces while treating patients during the time of COVID-19 dental emergency.
  • provide caring measures to ensure that patients do not feel “abandoned” while maintaining best and safe practices to “flatten the curve”.
