The Speakers

Mai-Ly Duong

Mai-Ly Duong, DMD, MPH, MAEd is Associate Professor and Associate Director of Special Care Dentistry at the Arizona School of Dentistry & Oral Health. A.T. Still University. In addition to her dental school training, she received a certificate in Advanced Education in General Dentistry from NYU Lutheran Medical Center. She is trained in sedation dentistry, as well as in treating patients who have special needs and complex medical conditions.  Mai-Ly is a Fellow of the Academy of General Dentistry (FAGD) and Special Care Dentistry (FSCD). She is active in numerous professional organizations, including serving on the Arizona Dental Foundation Board of Directors, Special Care Dentistry Association national board, and serves as the Arizona Chair of the Oral Cancer Foundation.

Prof. Ann Eshenaur Spolarich

Ann Eshenaur Spolarich is an internationally recognized author and speaker on pharmacology and the care of medically complex patients.  She has presented over 1,000 invited lectures and has over 125 professional publications.  She is Professor, Course Director of Oral Medicine and Pharmacology, and Assistant Dean for Research at the Arizona School of Dentistry & Oral Health, A.T. Still University (ATSU), where she teaches part-time in the Special Care Clinic.  Ann is also a faculty member in the NYU Langone AEGD residency program at ATSU.  Ann was awarded fellowship status in special care dental hygiene in 2016 and received the Education Award in 2021 from the Special Care Dentistry Association.

Karen Fallone

Karen Fallone graduated from the dental hygiene program at Monroe Community College in Rochester, New York in 1982.  She has 31 years of experience in working with patients with special needs.  Prior to working in the Special Care Clinic at the Arizona School of Dentistry & Oral Health, she was employed in a hospital dental clinic at the Eastman Institute for Oral Health, University of Rochester.  She is a regular volunteer with Special Olympics. Karen was awarded fellowship status in special care dental hygiene by the Special Care Dentistry Association in 2017.

Ellen Gohlke

Ellen Gohlke graduated in 1984 from Marquette University in Milwaukee, WI earning her Bachelor of Science Degree in Dental Hygiene. She has practiced in all fields of Dentistry throughout the last 35 years. For the past nine years, Ellen has worked exclusively in special care dentistry.  In 2019, Ellen was awarded fellowship status in special care dental hygiene by the Special Care Dentistry Association.

Scott Howell

Dr. Scott Howell is an assistant professor and Director of Teledentistry at A. T. Still University, Arizona School of Dentistry & Oral Health. He has worked in a variety of settings for people with special needs including group homes, long term care facilities, and in traditional dental clinics. Dr. Howell currently works in public health addressing the access to care issues faced by a variety of underserved populations, including those with special needs.  He is a member of the Special Care Dentistry Association (SCDA), from which he received his fellowship in Special Care Dentistry (FSCD) and is currently serving as SCDA's treasurer.

Timothy Lukavsky

Timothy Lukavsky, DDS, FSCD, graduated from Creighton University School of Dentistry and currently serves as the Director of Special Care Dentistry at the Arizona School of Dentistry & Oral Health, A.T. Still University. Tim volunteers his time with Special Olympics and leading dental mission trips to Mexico. He is a fellow in Special Care Dentistry (FSCD).

Kathleen Moralez

Kathleen Moralez has been a certified dental assistant for 35 years and a certified emergency medical technician for 5 years. She has worked in special care dentistry for 14 years. Kathy assists faculty and dental students with caring for patients with special needs, including those who are undergoing sedation. She is responsible for maintaining the equipment used in medical emergencies and helps to teach dental students about the management of medical emergencies in the dental setting.

Maureen Munnelly Perry

Dr. Maureen Perry is Professor and Director of the Center for Advanced Oral Health at the Arizona School of Dentistry & Oral Health (ASDOH). A.T. Still University. She completed a 3-year hospital residency focused on treating patients with medically complex conditions, behavioral health issues, developmental disabilities, and geriatric patients. Dr. Perry is a fellow of Special Care Dentistry and is a diplomate of the American Board of Special Care Dentistry. She is a past president of the Special Care Dental Association and has served as the U.S. council member for the International Association for Disability & Oral Health.
